Keyboard Shortcuts in the Employer Portal
Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate assessment setup, save your progress, and interact with supported dialogs in the Testlify Employer Portal.
Keyboard shortcuts at a glance
Use the Windows/Linux combinations on a Windows or Linux computer, and the macOS combinations on a Mac. The screenshots below show the shortcut hints displayed in the assessment setup interface.
| Action | Windows / Linux | macOS |
| Next / Save | Ctrl + Shift + → | ⌘ + Shift + → |
| Back / Close | Ctrl + Shift + ← | ⌘ + Shift + ← |
| Save & Close | Ctrl + Shift + Enter | ⌘ + Shift + Enter |
What the shortcut hints look like
When a keyboard shortcut is available, hover over the corresponding button to view its shortcut hint.
Back / Close — Ctrl + Shift + Left Arrow

Save & Close — Ctrl + Shift + Enter

Next / Save — Ctrl + Shift + Right Arrow

1. While setting up an assessment
Use Next / Save to continue to the next step, Back / Close to return to the previous step or close the setup flow, and Save & Close to save your work as a draft and exit.
What happens when you press Esc?
The result depends on whether you have made changes:
- If the assessment has a name or contains configured assessment items, Testlify displays a Save Changes confirmation modal.
- If no changes have been made, the assessment setup closes immediately.
Save Changes confirmation modal
- Save & Close: Saves the assessment as a draft and closes the assessment setup.
- Discard Changes: Closes the assessment setup. If the assessment has already been created, its draft assessment is deleted.
To dismiss the confirmation modal and return to assessment setup, press Esc again or click outside the modal.
2. While creating an assessment with AI
The same three keyboard shortcuts apply when creating an assessment using AI. Use Next / Save to continue, Back / Close to go back or close the flow, and Save & Close to save your progress as a draft and exit.
Pressing Esc follows the same assessment-setup rules: if you have entered a name or configured assessment items, Testlify asks you to confirm how to proceed; if there are no changes, setup closes immediately.
3. While working in Workspace Settings
In Workspace Settings, Esc responds to the current screen:
- If a modal is open, press Esc to close it.
- If no modal is open, press Esc to return to the previous page or section when navigation back is available.
To trigger the primary action—such as Save, Submit, or Confirm—press Ctrl + Shift + Enter on Windows/Linux or ⌘ + Shift + Enter on macOS, wherever the shortcut is supported.
4. Modal behavior
For supported modals across the Employer Portal:
- Press Esc to close the modal.
- Click outside the modal, on the backdrop, to close it.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter on Windows/Linux, or ⌘ + Shift + Enter on macOS, to trigger the primary action such as Submit, Save, or Confirm.
Some critical or irreversible actions may not allow a modal to close using Esc or by clicking outside it.
Remember
Esc behaves differently depending on context. During assessment setup, it may open a Save Changes confirmation. In Workspace Settings, it closes an open modal or navigates back when applicable.
