Assessment Security, Proctoring, and Integrity

Why assessment integrity matters

Assessment results are useful only when there is reasonable confidence that the recorded performance belongs to the candidate and reflects the permitted testing conditions.

Testlify provides configurable integrity controls that customers can select based on the role, assessment stakes, candidate population, and privacy requirements.

What controls may be available?

Depending on the customer's plan, settings, device, and assessment configuration, controls may include:

  • identity or face-presence checks
  • webcam snapshots or recording
  • dual-camera monitoring
  • screen recording
  • tab-switch or focus-change detection
  • copy-and-paste restrictions
  • full-screen enforcement
  • multiple-monitor detection
  • browser or lockdown controls
  • IP or location-related signals
  • AI-assistance or plugin detection
  • activity and event logs
  • randomized questions or answer options
  • time limits

Not every control is enabled for every assessment.

Are proctoring flags proof of cheating?

No.

A flag identifies an event that may require review. Legitimate explanations can include technical issues, accessibility needs, another person entering the room, network instability, or an accidental browser action.

Customers should review the full context before taking action.

How should customers choose a proctoring level?

Use controls proportionate to the risk.

Consider:

  • the importance of the decision
  • whether the skill can be verified later
  • candidate privacy
  • accessibility
  • technical requirements
  • regional legal requirements
  • candidate experience
  • the likelihood and impact of misconduct

More surveillance is not automatically more valid. Controls that create unnecessary barriers can harm the candidate experience or interfere with the construct being measured.

How should candidates be informed?

Candidates should receive clear information about:

  • required devices and permissions
  • whether video or screen activity will be captured
  • testing rules
  • prohibited assistance
  • expected environment
  • available support
  • accommodation options
  • how flagged events may be reviewed

Frequently asked questions

Can Testlify guarantee that no candidate will cheat?

No. Integrity controls reduce risk and create review evidence, but no system can guarantee complete prevention.

Does one flag mean the candidate cheated?

No. Review the event, pattern, assessment context, and candidate explanation.

Can proctoring be disabled?

Available settings depend on the product configuration. Customers should choose the least intrusive controls that adequately address the assessment risk.

Do stricter controls improve score validity?

Only when they address a real integrity threat without introducing greater accessibility, privacy, or measurement problems.

Should candidates be automatically rejected because of a flag?

No. Human review is recommended before making a high-stakes decision.
