How to Use the IP Proctoring Feature
The IP Proctoring feature in Testlify helps ensure the integrity of assessments by monitoring whether an assessment is accessed multiple times from the same IP address. This helps you detect potential misuse, such as candidates retrying assessments under different emails or sharing the assessment link.
This guide explains what IP Proctoring is, how to enable it, how the results appear, and best practices.
What IP Proctoring Does
IP Proctoring identifies situations where the same IP address was used more than once to access an assessment.
When enabled, Testlify flags repeated IP usage, helping you identify:
- The same candidate attempting the assessment using multiple email addresses
- Candidates sharing assessment links
- Multiple people using the same internet connection to take the same assessment (e.g., office, café, library, shared workspace)
- Different devices accessing the assessment from the same router
Note: Shared networks (schools, offices, coworking spaces, public Wi-Fi) often give multiple users the same outward-facing IP address. This does not always indicate cheating.
How to Enable IP Proctoring
Step 1: Create or Edit an Assessment
Go to the assessment you want to configure.
Step 2: Open Proctoring Settings
Select the Proctoring tab from the left menu.
Step 3: Enable IP Proctoring
Under Location and identity tracking, enable IP Proctoring.

This will activate monitoring for repeated IP usage.
Step 4: Save Changes
Once enabled, the system will automatically track IP usage for all candidates.
How IP Proctoring Appears in Candidate Reports
Once a candidate completes the assessment, the IP Proctoring result appears on their candidate page under the Proctoring → Trust Insights section.
You will see one of the following indicators:
✅ IP Violation – Not detected
This means that the IP address used was unique (or used only once) for this assessment session.
⚠️ IP Violation – Detected
This suggests repeated usage of the same IP.
Possible reasons:
- The same candidate attempted the test multiple times
- The link was shared with others
- Candidates used a shared network
- Multiple people were testing on the same device

How to Interpret IP Proctoring Results
| IP Status | Meaning | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Not detected | IP used only once | No further action needed |
| Detected | Assessment accessed multiple times from same IP | Check if: • Candidates share a workplace • Candidate restarted assessment • Multiple emails used • Network is shared (office/library) |
Important:
IP Proctoring does not prove cheating. It only indicates activity worth reviewing. Always cross-check with other proctoring signals (full-screen tracking, snapshots, behavior tracking, logs).
Legal & Privacy Considerations (Important)
Testlify collects and processes approximate location information using a candidate’s IP address as part of our proctoring and security measures. While IP-based location is generally considered non-sensitive, certain jurisdictions (such as the EU under GDPR or California under CCPA) may still consider it personal data.
To ensure transparency, we recommend informing your candidates that Testlify may record IP-based location data for proctoring and security purposes.
Suggested wording for your assessment instructions or privacy notice:
“This assessment uses Testlify’s built-in proctoring tools, which may capture approximate location information based on your IP address for security and verification purposes. For details on how this data is handled, please refer to Testlify’s privacy policy.”
Testlify ensures that all data collected is handled securely and in compliance with applicable privacy regulations. If you have specific compliance requirements, we recommend consulting your legal team.
Best Practices
- Use IP Proctoring together with Full-screen Mode, Snapshots, and Mouse Tracking for complete analysis
- Never rely on a single red flag to reject a candidate
- Reach out to candidates for clarification when necessary
- Document your proctoring policies for transparency
