Set Up and Use System Requirement Check in Testlify

The System Requirement Check feature in Testlify verifies that candidates have compatible devices before starting an assessment. When enabled, it runs an automated compatibility scan and gives employers a detailed report on each candidate's setup.

Watch this quick video guide:

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • An active Testlify employer account with access to Assessment Settings
  • Proctoring enabled for the assessment you want to configure

How It Works

When enabled, Testlify runs an automated compatibility check on the candidate's device before the test begins. The system checks predefined hardware and software requirements, then shows both the candidate and the employer whether each component passes or fails.

Employer Setup

Step 1: Enable System Requirement Check

  1. Go to your Assessment Settings page.
  2. Open the Proctoring section and locate System Requirement Check (disabled by default).
  3. Toggle it ON to activate.

Step 2: Configure Minimum Requirements

  1. Click Configure to open the setup modal.
  2. Select the components you want to verify:
    • Operating system
    • Browser version
    • Internet speed
    • RAM
    • Camera and microphone
  3. Set the minimum threshold for each component using the dropdowns or number inputs.
  4. Add or remove components as needed.
  5. Click Save to apply your configuration.

Candidate Experience

Step 1: System Requirements Page

After signing the honesty agreement, candidates see a System Requirements page listing your minimum device specifications. They are prompted to download a system check file.

Each file includes a unique license code (e.g., detection-0C8678E0-D95F-4B97-85C6-81DF0A232AB9.dmg) that securely links the system data to the candidate's session.

Step 2: Running the System Check

  1. The candidate downloads and runs the file.

  2. The check starts automatically, scanning all required components.

A progress screen appears for up to 2 minutes, refreshing every 10 seconds.

  3. Once the check completes:
    • Pass: The candidate proceeds to the test immediately.
    • Fail: The candidate sees a "Failed" message and can retry after fixing the issue.

Step 3: Viewing Results

Candidates can click View Requirements to see a breakdown of their system check:

  • Each component shows a Pass or Fail badge.

  • Failed checks expand by default for easier review.

  • A Learn More button shows troubleshooting steps for each failed check.

Employer Reporting

Access the System Check Report from the Candidate Details Page (CDP):

  • A System Check badge appears next to the candidate's profile.

  • Click View to open a detailed report of each component's pass/fail status — helping you confirm compatibility before the candidate begins.

Security and Privacy

  • The check file collects technical data only — no personal or identifiable information.
  • All data is encrypted in transit to Testlify.
  • The file runs locally and closes automatically after the check completes.

Troubleshooting

If a candidate's check fails:

  1. They can re-download and re-run the system check file.
  2. The Fixing the Issue modal provides step-by-step guidance for common problems, such as updating the browser or granting device permissions.
  3. Employers can review exactly which checks failed from their dashboard.

Key Notes

  • System Requirement Check is optional and disabled by default.
  • Candidates who fail cannot start the assessment until all requirements are met.
  • Employers can customize which system components are tested.
  • This feature reduces technical disruptions during live assessments.
