Personalizing the Candidate Experience with Language Settings

When candidates take an assessment on Testlify, they interact not only with the test questions you’ve set but also with system-generated elements such as instructions, navigation buttons, proctoring alerts, and section headers. By default, these elements appear in English.

However, Testlify gives you the flexibility to configure the candidate-facing language for each individual assessment. This ensures a localized, user-friendly experience that matches the comfort and preference of your candidates — whether they’re global applicants or local hires.

Steps to Change the Candidate-Facing Platform Language

1. Log in to Your Testlify Account

Go to app.testlify.com and log in using your credentials.

2. Select the Assessment

From your dashboard, choose the assessment you want to edit and click Edit.

3. Access Setup Options

On the left-hand sidebar, click Basic under Setup Assessment.

4. Expand Language Options

Under the Job Role and Assessment Name fields, click Show options.

5. Update Language Settings

You’ll see three key settings here:

  1. Language Supported (for candidate):
  • This defines which languages are available for candidates during the assessment.
  • By default, all supported languages are shown. However, as an employer, you can restrict it to specific languages.
  • If multiple languages are enabled here, the candidate will be able to switch between them anytime while taking the test.

  1. Default Language (for candidate):
  • This is the language in which the candidate first sees the assessment interface.
  • The candidate can later switch to another language if multiple are available under Language Supported.

  1. Language (assessment):
  • This setting is for internal use by the employer.
  • It helps when filtering or searching for tests/questions in the Testlify library (Basic > Tests > Questions).
  • This does not change the candidate-facing interface, but it’s useful for organizing and filtering your test library.

6. Save Changes

Click Next until the final step, then hit Save to apply your changes.

Once saved, the candidate interface — including navigation, instructions, and system messages — will appear in the selected default language, with the option to switch if multiple languages are supported.

Important Notes

  • If you want to change only the interface/system text (and not your written test content), you can toggle off Language (assessment). This way, your questions remain in their original language, but navigation and instructions adapt to the candidate’s default language.
  • Always preview the assessment after making changes. This allows you to experience exactly what the candidate will see.
  • If candidates are allowed multiple language options, they’ll see a language switcher on the test screen.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Will changing the language affect my test questions?

No. The test content remains exactly as you’ve written it. Only the system-generated interface (buttons, navigation, and instructions) is affected.

2. Can I apply the same language settings across multiple assessments?

Not at the moment. Language settings are configured individually per assessment.

3. What if the language I want isn’t available?

Please reach out to Testlify Support, and we’ll log your request for future enhancements.

4. Can candidates choose their own language?

Yes, but only if you’ve enabled more than one option under Language Supported (for candidate). If only one language is allowed, candidates will see everything in that language only.

5. What’s the difference between Default Language and Language Supported?

  • Default Language (for candidate) = what the candidate sees first when starting the test.
  • Language Supported (for candidate) = the list of all languages the candidate can switch to during the test.

6. What’s the purpose of Language (assessment)?

It’s an internal setting for employers. It helps filter and organize tests/questions in the Testlify library, but it does not change the candidate-facing interface.

Conclusion

Testlify makes it easy to provide a localized experience for candidates by allowing you to configure language settings at the assessment level. With flexible options like Language Supported, Default Language, and Language (assessment), you can ensure:

  • Candidates interact with the test in their preferred language.
  • Employers maintain clarity and organization when building assessments.

Whether you’re hiring globally or locally, using this feature ensures candidates feel comfortable and confident while taking their assessment.
