Typing Test – AI-Based Scoring Logic and Breakdown

Testlify's Typing Test uses an AI scoring model to objectively evaluate candidates on both accuracy and speed. This article explains how scores are calculated and where results appear in the platform.

How AI Scoring Works

The AI model evaluates each Typing Test submission using two weighted parameters:

  • Accuracy — 60% of the final score
  • Typing Speed (Words Per Minute) — 40% of the final score

Scoring Breakdown

Accuracy (60%)

Accuracy measures how correctly the candidate typed the given passage. Because accuracy carries the largest share of the score, candidates who type carefully and precisely will score well even at moderate speeds.

Typing Speed (40%)

Speed is measured in Words Per Minute (WPM) and mapped to a score using the following scale:

WPM Range Speed Score
40–50 WPM 70%
50–60 WPM 80%
60–75 WPM 90%
75+ WPM 100%

Final Score Calculation

The final score combines both parameters using this formula:

Final Score = (Accuracy % × 60%) + (Speed Score % × 40%)

Example Calculation

  • Accuracy: 100% → contributes 60 points (100% × 60%)
  • Speed: 44 WPM → Speed Score is 70% → contributes 28 points (70% × 40%)
  • Final Score: 60 + 28 = 88%

Custom Score Scaling

If you set a custom maximum score for the Typing Test (for example, 10 points), Testlify scales the percentage result proportionally:

  • 88% of 10 = 8.8 points

Use this setting to align the Typing Test score with your assessment's overall weighting.

Where Scores Appear

  • AI Insights (WPM Spotlights): The typing score feeds into AI-generated insights, making it easy to identify candidates with strong typing proficiency at a glance.

  • PDF Reports: The final Typing Test score is included in each candidate's PDF report.

  • Integrations: Scores are automatically passed to any connected third-party platforms.
  • Average Assessment Score: The Typing Test score is factored into the overall assessment average.
