How to Add a Google Spreadsheet Question to an Assessment

Overview

This guide explains how to add a Google Spreadsheet question to a Testlify assessment and how to review candidate responses after submission.

The spreadsheet question evaluates a candidate's proficiency in:

  • Excel fundamentals
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Formulas and functions
  • Calculations and data manipulation using tables

Before you begin

Prepare a Google Spreadsheet with the task or problem you want candidates to complete. When you add the spreadsheet link to a question, Testlify automatically creates a clone of it for each candidate — your original spreadsheet remains unchanged.

Step 1: Create an assessment

  1. Click Create Assessment.
  2. Enter a name for your assessment and proceed.

Step 2: Add tests

  1. Go to the Tests tab.
  2. Use the available filters to find and add relevant tests to your assessment.

Step 3: Add a spreadsheet question

  1. Go to the Questions tab.
  2. Click Custom.
  3. Select Spreadsheet.
  4. Fill in all question details, including your Google Spreadsheet link.
  5. Click Add to save the question.

Tip: The default score for a spreadsheet question is 5 points. Adjust it to reflect the weight you want this question to carry in the total assessment score.

To preview how the question appears to candidates, click Preview.

Step 4: Configure settings and save

  1. Go to the Settings tab and select the appropriate options for your assessment.
  2. Click Next, then Save to apply all changes.

Your assessment is ready. You can now invite candidates.

How candidates experience the spreadsheet question

When a candidate begins the assessment:

  • Testlify creates a clone of your Google Spreadsheet for that candidate. The candidate's email address appears in the sheet name, confirming a unique copy was created.
  • The candidate completes their work directly in their cloned spreadsheet.

How to review candidate responses

After a candidate completes the assessment, you have two ways to review their spreadsheet response:

  • In your workspace dashboard, click View Spreadsheet next to the candidate's result to open their response sheet directly.
  • In the downloadable PDF report, a hyperlink to the candidate's response spreadsheet is included.
