How to Enable and Use Screen Recording Proctoring

What Is Screen Recording Proctoring?

Testlify's Screen Recording feature captures a candidate's entire screen during an assessment, giving you a complete, verifiable record of their activity — no need to be in the room.

Before you begin

  • Candidates must use a Chromium-based browser (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge).
  • A stable internet connection is required throughout the assessment.
  • The candidate's device must support and permit screen sharing.
  • This feature is billed at $5 per candidate, with the first 5 candidates free. Contact your account manager for volume pricing.

Benefits of Screen Recording Proctoring

  1. Enhanced security: Detect unauthorized activity — search engines, prohibited resources, or outside assistance — from a full-screen view.
  2. Full transparency: Review exactly what each candidate did and stand behind every result with confidence.
  3. Confident hiring decisions: Extend offers knowing the evaluation was secure, auditable, and verifiable.

How to Enable Screen Recording on an Assessment

  1. Log in to your Testlify account and click the Assessment tab.
  2. Open the assessment you want to proctor.
  3. Go to SettingsProctoring and enable Screen recording.
  4. Click Save to apply.

Candidate Experience: Step-by-Step Screen Sharing Flow

Once screen recording is enabled, candidates are guided through the process automatically at the start of the assessment.

  1. A prompt appears before the assessment begins. The candidate must click Start sharing to continue.

  1. The candidate reviews test details, duration, and general instructions.

  1. When the candidate clicks Start, a browser dialog opens. They must:
    • Select Entire Screen
    • Enable system audio sharing
    • Click Share

  1. A screen-sharing indicator appears at the bottom of the screen, confirming sharing is active.

  1. If the candidate clicks Stop sharing, the assessment pauses. They must resume sharing before they can continue.

  1. After submission, the full recording appears in the candidate's individual report for your review.

Tip: Mention in your invitation email that screen sharing is required. Candidates who know in advance are less likely to drop off at the start of the assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enable screen recording for some assessments but not others?

Yes. Screen recording is configured per assessment, so you can apply stricter proctoring only where it's needed.

What happens if a candidate declines to share their screen?

They cannot proceed. Sharing the entire screen is mandatory when this feature is enabled.

Is the recording kept private?

Yes. Recordings are used solely to verify assessment integrity and are governed by Testlify's data privacy policies.

What are the technical requirements?

A stable internet connection, a Chromium-based browser (Chrome or Edge), and a device that supports screen sharing.
