How Tests and Assessments Work in Testlify

In Testlify, tests and assessments are related but serve distinct roles. Knowing the difference helps you build the right evaluation for every position.

What Is a Test?

A test is a focused evaluation of a single skill or competency — the building block of every assessment. Each test can contain:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Single-select questions
  • Open-ended questions
  • Video response questions

What Is an Assessment?

An assessment bundles one or more tests into a single, end-to-end evaluation. Candidates are always invited to an assessment — never to a test directly. You can:

  • Use library tests: Pick from Testlify's built-in test library.
  • Build custom tests: Create tests tailored to your specific role requirements.
  • Mix skill areas: Combine different competencies and question types within one assessment.

How to Create an Assessment

  1. Navigate to Assessments in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Create Assessment.
  3. Add tests from the library or create your own.
  4. Set time limits, instructions, and other options.
  5. Invite candidates directly from the assessment page.

Tip: Combine 2–3 tests for a well-rounded view — for example, a cognitive ability test, a role-specific skills test, and a video response question.
