Prevent Candidates from Using Mobile or Tablet Devices
Testlify lets you restrict assessments to desktop and laptop devices only. When enabled, candidates who attempt to open the assessment on a mobile phone or tablet are blocked and prompted to switch to a compatible device before they can start.
Before you begin
- Have an existing assessment open, or create a new one — this setting can be applied at any point.
- Inform candidates in advance that they must use a desktop or laptop. Anyone opening the link on a mobile or tablet will see a device restriction message and cannot proceed until they switch.
Enable the Device Restriction
- Log in to your Testlify workspace.
- Open the assessment you want to update — create a new one or select an existing one to edit.
- In the assessment editor, go to the Settings tab.
- Check the box labelled Prevent candidates from using mobile or tablet devices.
- Click Save. The restriction applies immediately to all candidates who access the link.

What happens after saving
Any candidate who opens the assessment link on a mobile phone or tablet sees a message instructing them to switch to a desktop or laptop. They cannot start or submit the assessment until they comply.
Tip: Add a reminder in your invitation email that a desktop or laptop is required. This eliminates last-minute confusion and reduces support requests on assessment day.
Important considerations
- Assessments with Video, Coding, Typing, or Google Workspace questions are already incompatible with mobile and tablet devices. Enabling this setting makes the desktop-only requirement explicit and consistent across all question types.
- Assessments without these question types can normally run on mobile or tablet. This setting overrides that default and enforces desktop-only access for all candidates.
- Always advise candidates before the assessment day so they can prepare a compatible device.
