Prevent Candidates from Using Mobile or Tablet Devices
To maintain assessment integrity and ensure the best testing experience, you can restrict Testlify assessments to desktop and laptop devices only. When this setting is enabled, candidates who try to open the assessment on a mobile phone or tablet are blocked from starting until they switch to a compatible device.
Before you begin
- You need an existing assessment to configure, or you can apply this setting while creating a new one.
- Inform candidates in advance that they must use a desktop or laptop. Candidates who open the assessment link on a mobile or tablet will see a device restriction message and will not be able to proceed.
How to enable the device restriction
- Log in to your Testlify workspace using your credentials.
- Open the assessment you want to update — either create a new assessment or select an existing one to edit.
- Inside the assessment editor, navigate to the Settings or Configuration panel.
- Locate the checkbox labelled Prevent candidates from using mobile or tablet devices and check it to enable the restriction.
- Click Save to apply your changes. The restriction takes effect immediately for all candidates accessing the assessment link.

What happens after saving
Once saved, any candidate who opens the assessment link on a mobile phone or tablet will be shown a message instructing them to switch to a desktop or laptop. They cannot start or submit the assessment until they do so.
Tip: Include a reminder in your candidate invitation email that a desktop or laptop is required. This prevents last-minute confusion and reduces support requests on assessment day.
Important considerations
- Assessments with Video, Coding, Typing, or Google Workspace questions are already incompatible with mobile and tablet devices. Enabling this setting makes the desktop-only requirement explicit and consistent across all question types in the assessment.
- Assessments without these question types can normally be completed on a mobile or tablet. This setting overrides that default behaviour and enforces desktop-only access for all candidates.
- Always advise candidates before the assessment begins so they can prepare and use a compatible device without disruption.
