How to Configure Assessment Reminder Emails and SMS Notifications
Boost assessment completion rates by setting up automated reminder emails and SMS notifications for candidates who haven't submitted their assessment. This guide walks you through customizing the reminder template, setting email frequency, and configuring SMS schedules.
Before You Begin
- You need Admin or Owner access to your Testlify workspace.
- SMS reminders require an active SMS notification plan on your workspace.
Step 1: Open Reminder Notification Settings
- Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your workspace.
- Select Notification from the left-hand menu.
- Scroll to the Notifications to test takers section and find Reminder.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to Reminder to reveal three options:
- Customize email — edit the reminder email content
- Set email frequency — control timing and repeat schedule for emails
- Set text frequency — control timing and repeat schedule for SMS

Step 2: Customize the Reminder Email
Edit the email template candidates receive when they haven't completed their assessment.
- Go to Settings → Notification.
- Click the ⋯ menu next to Reminder and select Customize email.
- Edit any of the following:
- Subject Line
- Email Body
- Dynamic tags: candidate name, workspace name, assessment link
- Click Save.
Tip: Click Send test email to preview your changes before going live. Use Reset to default to restore the original template at any time.

Step 3: Set Email Reminder Frequency
Control when the first reminder is sent and how often follow-ups are delivered.
- Go to Settings → Notification.
- Click the ⋯ menu next to Reminder and select Set email frequency.
- Adjust the settings below, then click Save.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Send first reminder after | Days after the assessment invitation is sent |
| Send follow-up reminders every | Interval between additional reminder emails |
| Stop after | Maximum number of reminders to send |
Example: Send the first reminder after 2 days, follow up every 3 days, and stop after 5 reminders.

Step 4: Set SMS Reminder Frequency
Configure SMS reminders independently from email reminders. The settings mirror the email frequency options.
- Go to Settings → Notification.
- Click the ⋯ menu next to Reminder and select Set text frequency.
- Adjust the settings below, then click Save.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Send first reminder after | Days after the assessment invitation is sent |
| Send follow-up reminders every | Interval between additional SMS reminders |
| Stop after | Maximum number of SMS reminders to send |

Best Practices
- Send the first reminder within 1–2 days of the invitation to reach candidates while the assessment is still top of mind.
- Space follow-up reminders 2–3 days apart to stay helpful without being intrusive.
- Cap the total number of reminders to avoid overwhelming candidates.
- Use both email and SMS (where available) to maximize reach and completion rates.
- Personalize the email body with your company's tone and branding.
Note: Reminders are sent only to candidates who have not yet completed the assessment. Email and SMS schedules are independent of each other. Customized email templates apply to all future reminders sent from the workspace.
