Enable Copy-Paste Tracking in Assessments

Copy-Paste Tracking records every copy or paste action candidates make during coding, long answer, and short answer questions — helping you ensure assessments reflect genuine, independent work.

Note: This feature works on Desktop and Laptop only. Mobile devices are not supported.

Before you begin

  • You need edit access to the assessment you want to configure.
  • Decide whether you want to automatically terminate candidates who exceed a set violation limit.

How to enable Copy-Paste Tracking

  1. Open the assessment you want to configure.
  2. In the left-side menu, go to SettingsProctoring.
  3. Check the box next to Copy/Paste Tracking to enable it.

Set automatic termination on violation (optional)

  1. Under Copy/Paste Tracking, check Terminate in case of violation.
  2. Enter a Violation Limit — for example, 5.
  3. Click Save.

Tip: A violation limit of 3–5 catches deliberate misuse while forgiving accidental pastes.

Review Copy-Paste violations

After a candidate submits the assessment:

  1. Open the candidate's Candidate Profile.
  2. Scroll to the Trust Insights section.
  3. Review the log of recorded copy-paste violations.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a candidate copies text once?

The action is logged as a violation. If Terminate in case of violation is enabled, Testlify automatically disqualifies the candidate once the limit is exceeded.

Can I track copy-paste activity without automatic termination?

Yes. Enable Copy/Paste Tracking without checking Terminate in case of violation. Violations are logged, but no automatic action is taken.

Which question types are tracked?

Coding, long answer, and short answer questions are tracked. Multiple-choice questions are not.

Can I set a custom violation limit?

Yes. Enter any number in the Violation Limit field. Candidates who exceed this count are terminated automatically.
