AI Voice / Video-Ai Question Not Responding/working

AI Voice / Video Question Not Responding?

Applies to: Voice AI and Video AI question types

If the AI interviewer seems stuck or isn't responding, work through the steps below in order.

Step 1: Check That Your Microphone Is Not Muted

The most common reason the AI does not respond is a muted microphone — check both the browser and your physical device.

Note: If you use headphones with an inline or on-ear mute button, make sure it is physically toggled OFF. The browser may show your mic as active even when the headphone button is muted.

Note: When the mic is muted in the browser or on the device, the AI cannot hear you at all.

The mic icon turns red when muted (top-right). A "You are on mute" banner also appears click the icon to unmute.

  • Red mic icon in browser toolbar: click it to unmute.
  • Physical mute button on headphones: make sure it is toggled off.
  • Click the lock icon in your browser URL bar and set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  • If permissions were denied before, refresh the page after allowing access.
  • Disconnect and reconnect any external microphone or webcam if it is not being detected.

Step 2: Eliminate Background Noise

The AI listens continuously and cannot distinguish your voice from background noise. Any ambient sound a fan, TV, or nearby conversation can cause it to keep waiting for you to finish speaking.

Note: If the AI detects any sound, it will keep waiting even if you have already finished answering.

  • Move to a quiet room or close windows and doors.
  • Mute televisions, music, or other audio sources nearby.
  • Close apps that may be using your microphone Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Skype, OBS Studio.

Step 3: Check Your Internet Connection and Browser

If your mic is unmuted and the room is quiet but the AI is still unresponsive, check your connection and browser settings.

Note: Use the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a stable connection for best results.

  • Switch to a wired (Ethernet) connection if Wi-Fi is unstable.
  • Close other tabs, streaming apps, or downloads consuming bandwidth.
  • Update your browser to the latest version and disable any VPN or proxy.
