Troubleshoot Camera and Microphone Permissions

Testlify requires access to your camera and microphone to record video answers. If no permission prompt appeared, your recording is not working, or you see a camera error, follow the steps below.

Before you begin

  • Confirm your camera and microphone are physically connected to your device.
  • Close any app currently using the camera or microphone (such as Zoom, Teams, or Skype).
  • Use Google Chrome for the best experience with Testlify.

Fix camera and microphone access

  1. Grant browser permissions.

When you first open a video question, your browser shows a permission pop-up. Click Allow. If you missed it, click the lock icon (or camera icon) to the left of the URL bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.

    Check your operating system permissions.

Even when browser permissions are set to Allow, your OS can block camera or microphone access:

    • Windows: Go to Settings → Privacy → Camera and Microphone and confirm your browser is allowed.
    • Mac: Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and Microphone and enable your browser.
  2. Update your browser.

An outdated browser can cause permission errors. Install the latest version, then try recording again.

  3. Disable browser extensions.

Some extensions block camera or microphone access. Disable all extensions, reload the page, and try recording. If it works, re-enable them one by one to find the conflicting extension.

  4. Try a different browser or device.

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, open Testlify in Google Chrome or on a different device to rule out a local configuration problem.
