Take Your Testlify Assessment: Complete Candidate Guide
This guide covers everything you need to take your Testlify assessment with confidence: required equipment, step-by-step instructions, and answers to common questions.
Watch the quick video overview:
Before you begin
Have the following ready before you start:
- A desktop or laptop computer (mobile devices are not recommended, especially for coding assessments)
- A working camera and microphone
- An updated version of Google Chrome
- A quiet, uninterrupted space for the duration of the assessment
- Your invitation email from the hiring company
Equipment Requirements
- Use a desktop or laptop: For the best experience, take your assessment on a desktop or laptop computer.
- Avoid mobile devices for coding tests: Mobile screens make coding simulations difficult. Use a desktop whenever possible.
Camera, Microphone & Browser Setup
A working camera and microphone are required for most assessments. Testlify checks both automatically before you begin.
- Video responses: If the hiring company requires video answers, you must have a camera and microphone connected.
- Proctoring: Testlify takes periodic snapshots during your assessment for GDPR-compliant proctoring. Only the hiring company can access these snapshots.
- Recommended browser: Use Google Chrome (keep it fully updated).
- Driver updates: Keep your camera and microphone drivers current.
- Multiple devices: If you have more than one camera or microphone, select the correct one in your browser settings.
Grant Camera & Microphone Permissions
If Testlify cannot access your camera or microphone, follow the steps for your device below.
Tip: If a permission pop-up appears when you open Testlify, click Allow directly in the browser prompt — this is the fastest fix.
Google Chrome (desktop)
- Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu (top right).
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
- Under Permissions, select Camera (or Microphone).
- Choose your preferred device from the drop-down menu.

- Select Camera or Microphone.
- Check the box next to your browser.

- Select Allow.
Step-by-Step: How to Take Your Assessment
Step 1 — Open your invitation email
Look for an email with the subject "You've been invited to an assessment." The email contains:
- Details from the company requesting the assessment.
- A direct link button to start your assessment.
- A full URL to copy into your browser if the button does not work.

No account is required — the link in the email gives you direct access.
Step 2 — Complete enrollment
Fill in your name and any other details required by the employer. This step is mandatory before you can proceed.

Step 3 — Verify your email
A verification code is sent to your email address. Copy and paste it into the verification box to continue.

Step 4 — Answer qualifying questions (if required)
Some assessments begin with qualifying questions about your background. Once you meet the employer's criteria, the assessment starts automatically.

Step 5 — Review pre-assessment reminders
A reminders screen confirms that your equipment is working. Check everything and click Proceed when ready.

Step 6 — Read the welcome screen
Each assessment opens with a welcome screen showing the number of tests, question types, and estimated completion time. Review it before starting.

Step 7 — Take the assessment
Each test section displays its name, type, time limit, question count, and instructions before it begins.

- Answer carefully: You cannot return to a previous question once you move on.
- Skip with caution: Skipped questions count as incorrect — guessing is better than leaving a question blank.
- Breaks: You may take breaks between sections. Once a section starts, it must be completed without stopping.
- Custom questions: Employers may add custom questions ranging from multiple-choice to essay and file uploads.
Question Types
Assessments may include: multiple-choice, single select, essay, coding, typing, video, audio, and file upload questions.
Need Help Reading a Question?
Some questions show a speaker icon (🔊) below the text. Click it to hear the question read aloud — especially helpful in Voice AI or audio-enabled assessments.

During the Assessment
- Time limits: Each section has a set time limit. Manage your time carefully.
- Breaks: Breaks are allowed between sections, not within a section.
After the Assessment
- Feedback: You may be asked to rate your experience. This helps Testlify improve.
- Completion confirmation: You will receive a confirmation message when the assessment is complete.
- Results: Your results go directly to the employer — Testlify does not share them with you separately.

Privacy & Data Security
All snapshots and videos captured during your assessment are GDPR-compliant and accessible only to the hiring company. Testlify does not share your data with third parties.
